Black Lightning: Season 1, Episode 8 "The Book of Revelations"

“The Book of Revelations” is straight up an episode filled….with revelations. This show has done an amazing job building up its characters, the plot, the politics, everything really. Tobias is a really scary villain…but now we are introduced to a bigger villain possibly. The ASA, or a shadowy government agency. This episode is where Gambi spilled the beans about himself and his past. There are some sad and shocking moments…stuff that makes the show even more thrilling. We are introduced to Martin Proctor, one of the leaders of the ASA. Yeah, I do not like his racist rhetoric.
Last episode had Jefferson babying Anissa about her newfound superhero powers. He decided to relax his father complex and train Anissa. Her training regimen is something you would see out of Men in Black. Jefferson confides to Lynn how he loves training her and that he can actually learn from her. Lynn actually has something to do here as she researched Green Light. Jennifer interns with her mother, but is there a chance she could also be developing superpowers? And of course, we learn the truth about Peter Gambi and how he lied to Jefferson for all these years. He lied about Alvin’s death, his own identity, and the mechanisms of the ASA. Basically, they have been running trials on kids with the Green Light. Yeah, things have gotten explosive! Meanwhile, Lala continues to exist in cuckoo land with his visions of LaWanda. What is the motivation of his newly found existence?
Black Lightning continues to be an excellent show that explores the father-daughter dynamic and the father-son (Gambi/Jefferson) dynamic. I was pleasantly surprised Lynn was given a plot-heavy role. The show has struggled with her character, but maybe things are about to change. Will she take over Gambi’s role now that the two men are not talking. How these revelations will affect the rest of the episode remains to be seen.
My Grade: A
