“Obscura” is a suspenseful episode that serves well for a climatic buildup to the season one finale of Smallville. Lex is essential to the episode as he ponders the question, “What else came to Earth during the meteor shower?” Someone dear to Clark has superpowers this time around and its no raging homicidal maniac. It is Lana Lang! She has visions and Clark uses these visions to save Chloe from a painful death. I thought that was well thought out. I found some things about Clark’s relationship with Chloe interesting. Wasn’t it established that they knew each other for a long time? Apparently, with them being freshmen in high school, they only knew each other for a year (since they met in the 8th grade)? Definitely somewhat odd.

In this episode, Lana develops superpowers after being hit by an explosion of a gas pipeline. Lana, now a clairvoyant, has visions of Chloe being kidnapped. Clark uses these images to try and save Chloe. Speaking of Chloe, Clark wants to take her to the spring formal. His best pal, Pete Ross is thinking the same. Roger Nixon makes a return and tells Lex to reopen his investigation on the meteor shower as a witness reported something else came down from the skies that day. Dr. Steven Hamilton also may have discovered something to do with Kal-El’s spaceship. Finally, after the death of his father, Whitney tells Lana he plans to leave Smallville and join the military.

Yes, so much happened here. This was a great episode that speeds us towards the finish line. Sooner than later, someone will discover Clark’s secret. Chloe or Lex will be the first ones to know, I gather. I loved how Lana used her powers for good, to save a friend from certain death. This is a very strong episode that promises an action-packed finale.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) The James Bond franchise is one of those franchises that will never die. It has been going strong since the first movie rolled out in the early 1960’s, and new James Bond movies are still produced today. What makes this series unique is they use multiple actors to play the titular character over the years. They all bring their own gravitas to the role, and each Bond is a different man when compared to each other (although the martini, shaken not stirred and the beautiful women among other things remain a constant.) So my first James Bond review for this blog is 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me. This wasn’t my first look at the series, but it was my first look at the older movies. I really liked what I saw. This is an old-fashioned story that combines a spy drama and an action-packed war movie into one package. Like many of the older Bond movies, the story can get borderline preposterous.   Broadcast News (1987) If you watched the trailer for James L. Brooks’s Broadcast News , you would be forgiven if you thought this film is about a romantic love triangle set in a news station. Yes, there are aspects of romance, but it is way more than that. Brooks is a very smart, adept director who makes a living in creating deep, meaningful characterizations. In my eyes, Brooks had ideas about how work can overtake personal lives and any romance for these workaholics is essentially just a front because quite frankly, these people love to work…as we see detailed with our main characters. In addition, this film is quite informative. Even in 1987, news stations were more about entertainment and the looks, rather than delivering the actual news itself. It was a newer trend that eventually took over networks. With all the insanity within the newsroom, this film manages to find humanity within its characters.
